In 1911, Standard Oil was broken up into 34 companies, some of which were named “Standard Oil” and had the rights to that brand in certain states, Standard Oil of New Jersey, or “Jersey Standard” had the rights in that state, plus in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the District of Columbia… By 1941, it had also acquired the rights in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Louisiana, In those states, it marketed its products under the brand “Esso”, the phonetic pronunciation of the letters “S” and “O”…. This old lighter is a neat piece of advertising from the late 1950’s….. In 1958 Esso introduced the “Happy Motoring” campaign along with the Esso “Oil Drop Man” who was paired with this slogan…… This neat, little lighter is marked “Rolex Japan” and it measures a mere 2″ by 1 3/4″…. This is a really cool piece for any collector, it has some scratches and it could use a good cleaning and polishing, also we are unable to test it because its missing the flint….
